Peter Weir: The Truman Show (1998)

On paper it was a fine idea about a fellow who lives in a non-real world. The thing is that this story is told in five minutes, but the director Peter Weir (who has done even quite good movies too) has to spend with that one and a half hour. Without any reason at all! Endless long and dull movie to watch. It was it's year's 'New Clothes of the Emperor'... And someone really praised Jim Carrey's performance! O tempora, o mores!

Steven Spielberg: E.T. (1982)

This same feeling of a disappointment catches you often when you hear of something extragood and then you must wait and wait until you finally see It by yourself. It is of course true that you should see the movie right the way when it comes out and from the big screen; not twenty years after from tv lying on your couch. But still: circumstances should not be the thing, I mean: what really works, works in spite of those? 'E.T.' was one big disappointment. It was not only that technology, timing and effects were oldfashioned. It was the story itself. Neither it takes you with or not. This didn't take me anywhere else than to sleep. I think Steven Spielberg can make also entertaining movies. Now and then.

Tämä sama pettymys iskee usein, kun kuulee hyvää ja odottaa ja odottaa ja sitten vihdoin näkee itsekin. On tietysti totta, että elokuva pitäisi nähdä heti tuoreeltaan ja oikealla, isolla valkokankaalla, eikä vasta vuosien päästä tv-ruudusta kotisohvalla. Mutta silti: olosuhteet eivät saisi vaikuttaa ja kääntäen se mikä toimii, toimii niistä riippumatta. 'E.T.' osoittautui isoksi pettymykseksi. Kyse ei ole tekniikan ohituksesta, ulkoasun ja tehosteiden vanhanaikaisuudesta, vaan itse tarinasta. Se joko vie tai sitten ei. Minua se ei vienyt kuin unten maille. Steven Spielberg osaa kyllä tehdä viihdyttävääkin elokuvaa!

Jane Campion: Piano (1992)

Beautiful, touching and deep! I was really excited when I bought this movie ja sat down. And the result was, like most of the time, a big disappointment; the movie was dull, dull and dull. No plot, no humour, no suspence, no nothing. It can of course be the point of wiev. I mean: the wiever is not in right mood or something like that, but yet: that's the right we wievers do have! Movies are made for us. And then million of critics can't be wrong.

Kaunis, koskettava ja syvällinen! Kiinnostuneena ja odottavana hankin elokuvan ja istuin katsomaan. Tuloksena oli, kuten usein, totaalinen pettymys; elokuva olikin kuivakka, tosikkomainen ja tavallisen tylsä. Kyse voi aina olla makuasioista. Siitä, että vastaanottaja ei olekaan vastaanottavainen, mutta toisaalta: juuri se oikeus meillä katsojilla on! Meille elokuvat on tehty. Ja silloin miljoona kriitikkoa voi olla väärässä.
